    Re: Vaccinations

Thanks for clarifying this Lochan, its a complex business indeed . My dogs havent ever had annual boosters, but three yearly ones as reccommended by our Vet, but they do have the Lepto one every year as they both spend a lot of time in water courses .

    Re: Vaccinations

In 27 years of clinical practice I've seen only a handful of significant, confirmed adverse reactions to vaccines. I've seen hundreds of dogs die or become seriously ill because they weren't adequately vaccinated.

I have been around a long time and have seen dogs die of distemper, parvovirus and leptospirosis, that is why I am very concerned when I read the 'anti- vaccination camp' who seem to think vaccinations are just to line the veterinary surgeons' pockets.

Great advice and info from Lochan.

I agree. And most vets nowadays are much more flexible about vaccinating adult dogs, not just diving in with the whole lot every year. The large study which looks at vaccine damage found that the risks increased as dogs reached adulthood, and were greater in smaller dogs. They were also greater in neutered dogs. The risks also increased with the number of shots given at a single visit. All information you could discuss with your vet. In the unlikely event he/she won't discuss, you may want to talk to another vet :)

I worry about lepto with poppy as she loves water and the dirtier the better :-\ annoyingly we don't know which part of the vaccine she reacted to but due to the neuro symptoms they suspect it was most likely the lepto part ( typical). Interestingly the neuro referral vet said that they do quite frequently see adverse reactions but that they often don't get documented as adverse vaccination occurrences due to the difficulty of definitively proving it. My other dogs get done 3 yearly. I hope that at least that affords some protection to poppy as they can't pass anything on to her.x

    Re: Vaccinations

We have to have a rabies vaccination as well as the usual others. Luckily now it is only done every two years; it seems to be a biggie and can have quite an effect on the dogs for a day or two, so I would never arrange for the rabies vaccination just before a competition, and am also prepared to let the dog take it very easy for a day or so afterwards.

A word of warning - I once overdosed one of my dogs by giving him worming pills AND frontline on the same day as his vaccinations. Poor lad, he was quite poorly. I'm always very careful to space things out now.

Good advice. Charlie is also due advocate and a tape worm treatment, and my vet was very clear that at least a week apart, and give everything separately, is a good idea.
