Just had a conversation with someone I know and she wasn't happy, her vet had said he could only examine her Labrador on his table which meant she had to pick Olliedog up which both she and he weren't happy with. Never occurred to me any vet would ask that as ours just plops down onto the floor and has a wrestle with ours and examines her there.
I only have to use the table when Betty Chihuahua is being seen.

So I just wondered does your vet examine on the floor or the table ? As I can't imagine being able to lift Elsie !

Ours asks what would be best for the dog, table or floor.

Both - on the floor seemed to be expected on all visits bar the first couple of visits when she was tiny for me but my husband took her in for her pre-op check and she was plonked on the table. Not that I imagine it's easy to 'plonk' 22kg of wriggly labrador.

My old vets always examined big dogs on the floor. I thought that was the norm. ???

My new vet actually has a levitating table. Honestly. Well ok hydraulic rather than levitating I suppose. ::)

It starts off on the floor, a small step up for the dog to get on, then he can lift it as high as he wants !!! Great idea in theory. Unfortunately it needs a rubber mat the dogs aren't too keen on it being slippy. :-\

Our vets roll around on the floor with Mira for a good licking and tummy rub (I'll leave you to work out who does what ;))
When she was a wee pup we plonked her on the table for her first couple of visits, but its been floor since then :)

At 38 kilos, no one is going to volunteer to pick Sam up onto any table , he stays firmly on the floor ;) ;)

It depends on the vet. The ear vet always wants Charlie on the table, most other vets see him on the floor. I don't have any trouble picking him up - he is 28kgs - and he'll sit still on a table. He is still lifted in and out of the car, and gets treats associated with that, so I think that's why he is fine about being picked up. But if your dog is too heavy for you to lift, that's that. But otherwise getting them ok - as adults - with being lifted is a good thing to do. I thought I was going to have to lift Charlie over a wire fence the other day, and I thought he'd be ok with it (but we found a hole instead).

Murphy is always seen on the floor. I like how the vets plonk themselves down with him and give him nice cuddles and treats. He loves the vets amd im not suprised! Someone told me about a diff local vets, they took their young old english sheepdog in, and the vet didnt acknowlegde him at all, just spoke to the owner and then when she tried to examine him she didnt say hi or anythinh and so he wouldnt stay still and she said he was very badly behaved. But she hadnt let him sniff her or anything! Silly woman!

Every gundog trainer I've been to - bar one (the one I train with now :) ) - has done this. I hate it. Sure, you can get your pet not to expect to say hello, but most pets do say hello, everyone else in their life says hello, and in all other circumstances it's expected that pets say hello (nicely). Charlie thinks it's very rude of them.

Yea, i think its rude too. Most people who come to my house say hi to Murphy before me! What was silly was that the vet didnt let him sniff her or anything and hed never met her before, but then expected him to stay still when she examined him. If i went to a doctor and they just tried to examine me without speaking to me Id be rather annoyed! Lol

I used to have a German Shorthaired Pointer who would jump up onto the vet's examination table as soon as she got into the surgery ;D

Floor after the first few visits. No way could I lift Harley at 26kg with my back! My vets all get on the floor and say hi and let her lick them :)

Brilliant how many lovely vets we have - I think it makes such a difference to the experience for the dogs.
