Re: Visit to the UK As I understand it, - it's POPPY! Two Poppies from the same litter... And they were the last two to be picked up, so I always had a bit of a bad conscience about the little black pup left on her own, as her prospective buyer backed out at the last moment... Anyway, in the end she found a lovely home with super people, and we are in contact with them, so it was a delight for the OH to be able to visit them at the weekend.
Re: Visit to the UK Oh that is lovely. They look very alike in the picture - are they at all? (other than in name ;D )
Re: Visit to the UK Well, they are about the same size, though our Poppy is stockier and very slightly bigger. The other Poppy is a rather more laid-back character - and not at all fixated on retrieving!!! Can take or leave dummies!!!! So although they are both very nice dogs, and resemble each other physically, I'd actually say their characters aren't all that similar...
Re: Visit to the UK awh how lovely......definitely not identical in looks .....my boy was from black mum, chocolate dad all black litter .what colour are mum and dad ?
Re: Visit to the UK Poppy looks lovely on Portland - great area for her, should be lots of good walks there. Hope you are having a good time Karen.
Re: Visit to the UK Lynne, their mum is black, the father is a beautiful dark fox red. Five golden and one black pup in the litter. As I understand it, the blue spot on Poppy's tongue means she carries black pigmentation, so if we ever breed from her she may well have some black pups.
Oh that's interesting, I thought black was dominant and so a dog with a black and a yellow gene would be black and a dog would need two yellows to be yellow or is it more complicated than that? Fascinating !!
Re: Visit to the UK pippa put a thread up a few weeks ago on the determination of colour, interesting
Re: Visit to the UK I'm not sure I found the thread you meant Lynne but I did find this one: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/forums/index.php/topic,106.msg446.html#msg446 which has a really interesting link to this doc on colour in labs which definitely says that two yellow labs can produce a black puppy although it doesn't appear to be at all common: http://www.labbies.com/genetics2.htm#Sable
I thought black was dominant and so a dog with a black and a yellow gene would be black and a dog would need two yellows to be yellow or is it more complicated than that? Fascinating !!
Yes, black is dominant, which means that a black dog can have only one Black gene (or allele) and still be black (as long as it also only has one or no Yellow alleles). Two Yellow alleles = a yellow dog, no matter what else it is carrying. The Poppys' black Mum may have had two or one Black alleles (can't tell), but she definitely had a hidden yellow allele to produce yellow pups with the yellow Dad. I was going to write more but Pippa explains it much better here: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/?p=474
Re: Visit to the UK Riley came from a black mum carrying yellow and a yellow dad so the litter had black and yellow pups - all adorable ;D
Re: Visit to the UK OH is taking our Poppy out with the gun today... Do hope all goes well... Will report back later. I am taking the train down to Dorset and will meet them there, so will hear all about Poppy's first experience with guns then.
Re: Visit to the UK All went we, apparently! They were with another young Labrador and her owner. OH played with the dogs with the dummies, while the other person took the gun quite a way away and fired it, then came closer and fired again, then a bit closer still... The other dog was nervous, but our Poppy apparently was just fixated on the dummies and wasn't at all worried by the gunshots. I am pleased with this result (and with the fact that OH was so responsible and didn't get carried away...).
