My lab was potty trained pretty well, early and for a while has been sleeping from 830-11-ish and going out for pee/poop and then sleeping until I get up at 5am. Sometimes he'd go from 9-5. The last few weeks he's barked at 2 or 3am and we wait to see if he quiets. If he doesn't, my husband takes him outside, he goes to the bathroom and he puts him back in his pen. Sometimes he is quiet until I get up and other times he balks. One night my husband stayed on couch near him so his barking wouldn't wake me up or possibly a neighbor. I wonder why he would start to wake up in the middle of the night with a mature bladder when he didn't before? Is it really he has to go (not diarrhea) or he just misses us?
Hi Deb, I would go back to setting an alarm and getting up with him at midnight with a very boring go to the bathroom break. And do this for a couple of weeks. I would also tighten up your nighttime routine of what he does for the hour before bedtime, making sure to go potty before bed and go to bed exhausted. He might actually have to go to the bathroom, or he might just be bored. If he is trustworthy outside of his crate, you might also consider not locking him in at night...but this will depend on your individual pup and what he might have access too. Each pup is different, so a bit of trial and error is going to be your best bet. Good luck!!!
Thanks, sadly I can't leave him, my first pup I can't leave because he chews wood, cloth etc. But I will do the backtrack and that way I'll know he went. Maybe right now, it's too early for him.
He might be being disturbed by noises outside(foxes/hedgehogs etc) You could try a radio on at a low level to block out any sudden noise.
