Albie is a good boy and normally goes straight to sleep when we put him in his pen about 11pm. However he wakes us up barking about 5 every morning regular as clock work. Sometimes he needs a poo but other he doesn't but still wakes up anyway. He's now 12 weeks old. Is this just a puppy thing he will grow out of?
Homer's always been an early riser, now he has the whole house he'll come in and stare at us from about 5am. I get up, let him out, let him in again and go back to bed for another hour snooze until 6am when it's breakfast time.
So do you all think as he gets older he might stop the barking at 5-30 every single morning? We have tried ignoring him and it makes no difference.
In my experience, yes, dogs do sleep longer in the mornings as they grow up. (To give you hope, my Molly likes to snooze till about 10.30) However, you might try making sure the room is really dark, as the early morning light might be waking him - and of course Mags' suggestion that it might be a noise outside. At 12 weeks I wouldn't be expecting to sleep much later than 6 though - it's a bit like having a toddler!
I'm with Mags and Joy on the noise etc. Could Albie being woken by the heating turning on, or a neighbour closes car doors? I wouldn't ignore a pup that started crying after around 6 hours of sleep in a crate. If Juno was fidgety (she never barked or whined) I used to go down, take her out on lead to the garden for toileting and then pop her back in her crate with go back to sleep, it's bedtime. Minimal interaction I found was the key for her to settle.
Oh yes! My three pups have all slept longer as they got older, I get up at 7:30 every morning but, if I do stay longer the dogs stay asleep. Twiglet is 11 months old tomorrow - and we go to bed early (10pm) . .
Well that's a huge relief! Hopefully Albie will be like all your dogs and improve as he gets older! He sleeps through well it's just the 5-30 starts that are killing us
It's tough. To me, before 6am is "the middle of the night". We went through this too with Lilly, she just wanted out to play, just have to be strong once you know its not for toilet trips.
Hi there, My dog did exactly the same when he was 7 months or so....it was a sound that he was hearing that he associated with my appearance downstairs ...if I wasn't as swift as he hoped he gave me a holler!i never appeared when he was grumbling though ....always wait for quiet before you do. Eventually he has ended up in our bed....he was still an early riser, starting to get restless and checking to see if I was awake from first light ....he could even judge the time lapse between the last prayer call before daylight and 5 minutes before my alarm went off ( we live in a Muslim country hence the prayer call) He is 3 now and is passed out u Gil my alarm goes off ,but the instant he hears it,he jumps up like zebedee and flings himself on top of me! No leisurely stretching and yawning in our house.....
My pup is approaching 14 weeks now. He's always been really good when it came to bed time for the most part. at first I was putting him to bed just before 10 and finding he would wake at 5:30ish, I started setting my alarm to just after this and making sure he associated that noise with me getting up. After a week or so he started waiting until he heard my alarm before becoming active (he would often wake before this but would lie quietly in his crate) and gradually I kept upping the time it went off at, which has worked a charm for me. Now at 14 weeks, I can pretty comfortably rely on him to lie quietly in his crate all the way from 9pm - 7am with no complaints. I've even started to notice that he'll quite happily continue to lie in his crate even after I've got up and opened the crate door
How dark is his sleeping area and what time does the sun come up. They also have a tendency to wake at first light.
Our puppy seems to wake up the second he hears us even though we are super quiet and we play classical music for him. I think possibly he hears our neighbor start his truck at 5:30am but right now his crate is in the main area we spend time in our home, if we put it in a different room that would be darker during the day when he's in it he wouldn't be near us, what should I do?
