Re: Warning to Somerset and Avon dog owners after several cases of Leptospirosis I have had some experience of Leptospirosis (Wiel's disease) in that many years ago I had a Labrador who caught it and survived after swimming in the Basingstoke canal and a 60 year old friend in Salisbury who caught and died from the disease after cleaning out his fish pond. The disease is commonly spread by rats urinating in stagnant water and my friendly rat catcher tells me that there has been a huge increase in the numbers of rats due entirely to the popular fashion of composting one's kitchen waste in the garden. Beware! Roger
Re: Warning to Somerset and Avon dog owners after several cases of Leptospirosis This is all around my area my vets have actually treated a few cases recently. Scary stuff!
Re: Warning to Somerset and Avon dog owners after several cases of Leptospirosis Years ago in Australia, on a cattle station, my brother got this and was really ill even though he was in his early 20s. Probably left lasting damage.
Re: Warning to Somerset and Avon dog owners after several cases of Leptospirosis An acquaintance of mine died from this in her early 40s.
