Hi guys, I was wondering how often you guys wash your dogs? Zulu is 11 weeks and I haven’t given him a wash yet. Also, any recommendations to shampoos to use and ones to avoid? Cheers, Robbie
Re: Washing your puppy I don't wash my dogs unless they have rolled in something awful- I find that splashing in the river and brushing them afterwards works just fine. I'm always worried that shampoo might strip natural oils from their coat.
Re: Washing your puppy Well that's what I do and I don't think my dogs are smelly at all! I bet someone will disagree though and promote a bit of 'doggy styling' with shampoo, conditioner and hot oil treatment (the last bit might be an exaggeration, but let's see who else responds!) I watched a programme on Crufts and saw dogs being groomed using all kinds of treatments....and a recent TV documentary on poodle styling took grooming to a completely different level (poor dogs!)
Re: Washing your puppy Hey Robbie , I usually wash them once a month , but that's only when i think they too smelly or have been rolling around in muck during the rain etc . I use puppy shampoo on Bruno the pup and another one for Simba the bigger one . But I don't think its necessary for a wash unless u think they really dirty , cause whatever we try to do to keep them clean , they will be dogs rite . Stick to any puppy shampoo which is not harsh . Unfortunately i do not have a river around where i live , I take them to the beach , and the dog beach water smells more of fish i dunno why ;D . So i wash them after the beach . Hope I was helpful . Cheers Vish
Re: Washing your puppy The main reason i want to wash Zulu, is not because he smells, but more for hygiene purposes. What i mean by that is... while im at work Zulu will pee on his mat and the tiles near the mat.. he then often walks in his own pee and accidentally sits in it (when i get home and sits like a good boy) Would this justify giving Zulu a clean even though he doesn't really smell?
Re: Washing your puppy Charlie used to "pee and walk" when he was tiny, I used to wipe him over with an anti-bac pet wipe. Zulu must be 12 weeks now? With the help of someone popping in while I was at work, I was avoiding most daytime accidents by 12 weeks. All dogs are different, of course. But I mention this Robbie just because it's so important to work much, much harder on the toilet training when allowing toileting inside at first because you can't avoid it - but it is not a long term strategy. Did you find some help/dog walker to call in?
Re: Washing your puppy Hi, We come to at lunch time to take him for a walk, toilet break and his lunch. He has a turfed area and generally goes to the toilet (if needed) on the turf. We are also considering allowing him access to our outside area (doggy door)by allowing him to "take himself" to the toilet outside if needed. But we first want to make sure the yard is secure, so we will try it out while we home. Cheers, Robbie
Re: Washing your puppy We washed Penny when we first got her home as a puppy but then after that it's only if she's excessively dirty or sometimes her fur feels kinda greasy. I always bath her if we've been to the beach and she's been in the sea (which isn't that often) as I don't like the thought of the salt water on her fur and skin for a long time. Other than that she's goes swimming in the river every now and then and that's enough!
Re: Washing your puppy We never wash Poppy UNLESS she has done the dreaded fox-poo roll. Robbie, are you taking measures to socialize Zulu? I know it's a lot to ask after you have been at work all day, but now is the time he needs to be meeting lots of dogs and people, and getting out and about.
Re: Washing your puppy Have never had to wash The DivaDog but she does swim regularly in moving clean water
Re: Washing your puppy About once a month. Scout goes on a lot of different walks, to our local parks, the hills and she is at the beach a lot. She loves running through the biggest muddiest puddles, climbing up steep banks and pulling roots and bushes and twigs on top of herself. She loves to go in the sea water then enjoys a good roll around in the sand and is a rite mess when she gets back. She always gets a good dashing down in the front garden before we go in the house but yes once a month she gets a warm shower and her bed, blanket and all soft toys gets put in the washing machine. I don't have a huge house, so we smell her "doggy smell" quite a lot and I personally don't like it.
Re: Washing your puppy We have a bath if there is a pong. So - after a poo roll, often after a beach walk/swim (yeah ok....roll in dead fish/dead seagull may be involved here too) We have had 3 baths in the one week - think that is the most. Longest we have been is probably 6 weeks. Also, we get a wash down after hydrotherapy. No longer a shampoo though (policy change) Just really wanted to add how good the Animology Fox Poo shampoo is. Best thing we have found for really bad smells. Has a kind of vague coal tar like after-smell, nothing over-scented and odious and is a definite stayer for our house.
