Hi all, This is my first post since we brought Effie our chocolate lab home last week. Our first week with her has been a dream, but being new puppy parents we are just learning what is normal/not normal for an 8 week-old lab. This may as a result be a daft question. I'm worrying about our girl today as each time we take her out for a wee she does one as normal but then she is spending her whole time outside squatting down as if trying to wee again but not managing anything. At one point this morning she stayed still for a whole minute trying to produce something! She still seems quite happy but I have noticed her whimpering whilst outside which she doesn't normally do. Inside the house, she is not trying to wee and she seems normal. She's been sleeping as normal, perhaps waking up a bit sooner than she usually would. I may be imaging it, but she does seem to be giving her 'bits' more attention than she usually does as well. Slightly worried she may have a urine infection. My other half thinks she is just marking. It did snow last night so don't know if all the snow on the ground is making her act differently as well. She has her first appointment with the vet tomorrow and I will mention to him as well. Meanwhile, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hello there, exciting times having a new puppy! This doesn't sound normal to me - an 8 week old girl pup won't mark (older boys will, and some older girls, but even then not until they are a few months old). A chat with the vet sounds a very good idea.
It might help the vet if you can get a urine sample to take along, try to catch one tomorrow before you go.
Hi pleased to hear that Effie is settling in nicely. Definitely speak to the vet tomorrow as the constant squatting without doing a wee doesn't sound normal and as JulieT says she is far too young to be 'scenting' . It may help if you could also take a sample of her wee to the vet so he can do a quick check. Please let us know you get on with the vet.
Hi everyone, Managed to get a sample this morning and the vet said all is fine and no signs of infection. Effie passed all the tests today so vet thinks it could be colitis, in which case we just need to watch her very carefully and expect the signs to be gone within the week. Fingers crossed for our girl! She is still happy as Larry and loving the snow here!
Now that I can see the photo just wanted to say she is gorgeous - for some reason I couldn't see the photo on my phone
What a stunning puppy Effie is, that's a beautiful photo and again jealous of the snow So glad Effie is a bit better everything crossed here. xx
