I've never come across this before and I've no idea why it happens. ??? Three times now Scott has woken up and started to over salivate. Not a lot but enough for him to keep licking his lips and swallowing. It's not a regular thing. The first time was probably a couple of months ago the third time last night. The first two times it was just before dinner after he'd been asleep after our long walk. It lasts a couple of minutes, maybe not even that long and then he is back to normal. I've checked his mouth which is fine and I can't see any kind of pattern other than it being when he wakes up. Its a mystery to me. :-\
Re: Weird salivation That is strange ??? Harley drools if she sees certain treats, but nothing like you describe! Could it be something he ate yesterday?
Re: Weird salivation Some dogs (mainly terriers but labs do it too) get a thing called biliary reflux. It is when bile leaks back into the stomach from the small intestine and causes nausea and salivation. It occurs at the maximum time away from feeding, usually after the dog has been asleep. Some dogs will actually vomit bile, others just look a bit uncomfortable. It is of no particular clinical significance, but if it became an issue spreading meals out over the day to avoid that empty stomach usually stops it.
Re: Weird salivation That's really interesting Lochan.... I wonder if that's a bit like in human when we feel so hungry we feel sick...?
Re: Weird salivation Thank you Lochan. They did go through a phase when pups of vomiting bile very early in the morning. The vet explained it was probably due to an empty stomach so ever since Ive given them a small part of their ration at bed time. It would only have been about 2 hours after his tea last night though. I suppose it could be indigestion. ???
Re: Weird salivation The only times Charlie has done anything like this: battery chewing, a sore throat, during teething, and when he had a dreadful tummy bug last Christmas. Maybe Scott just gets an upset tummy time to time?
Re: Weird salivation Very possible Julie. : I'm now actually wondering, it will sound daft, if rabbit muck could give him some sort of indigestion . ??? It certainly has an effect on his bowel movements. It makes him much firmer !!!!! My only other thought, again it will sound daft, is dreaming. The saliva production is a bit like when you keep hold of a treat for a bit too long not actually drooling.
I started this thread over two years ago looking at the date. Wow time flies. Scott still over salivates. Not regularly but a few times now it has lasted quite awhile. He did it last night. It started about 9pm he looked worried about it and he was still liking his lips when he went in his crate at 10pm. I think it must be something similar to what lochan describes above although it can occur only a couple of hours after food like last night. I think it is always after sleeping though. He is prone to vomiting bile although again not regularly. I mentioned it to my vet recently who said it sounds like he gets a bit of an upset stomach. She wasn't concerned and didn't suggest anything. I spread their food out through the day and food does seem to help I think. I'm just wondering if there's anything else I can do.
How strange Jen , but as long as he is fit in every other way, try not to worry too much, but I know you will do Sam salivates a lot when he is excited , one look at his dummy and he`s off , drool big style
