after reading through many posts, listening to all the fun you are having, i have decided to give this retrieving a go .....i have just ordered a rabbit skin ball, a rabbit skin sleeve dummy, and a rabbit scent stick, .......jasper is still on lead walks at the moment, however the field behind my house as limited distractions, so as from next week, i am going to take him on the field and do a little retrieving with him i have kept jasper mentally stimulated with tricks and party games,...there are only so many tricks we can do i have never intended to do any gun doggy things,....jasper is a good listener and soon picks up on things he is a born pleaser, being 9 month old this week i think its time i let him grow up and do the big boy things i am only starting this as a fun thing,.......but i do tend to give every thing my 100% who knows what might happen, watch this space i have not had the chance with not being well to do the public transport but that is on the top of my list of things to do having plenty time on my hands at the moment i have been engrossed with on line shopping,.......i will look like a pro with my new drizebone jacket on my hunters , whistle, clicker , treat bag and my bag of rabbit skins,........oh and there's loads of gundog trainers in my area .......SLOW DOWN LYNNE
Re: well well well who would have thought it Do you know today when Amy was looking for her ball in the field i could see how happy she was so thought about reading up on it myself!
Re: well well well who would have thought it after reading all the post jade and the fun they are having , give it a go
Re: well well well who would have thought it Hi Glad your going to give retrieving a go. It's a lot of fun, entertains and uses energy so lots of bases covered. I don't really think of retrieving as a gun doggy thing. Obviously it is that's what they are bred for but all the dogs in my extended family retrieve. I've just spent the last hour with the 3 of them down at my aunties racing none stop for balls. I don't take mine 5 would be a bit much! Harry, Pip and Ralph are a concoction of goodness knows what, bit of terrier, alsation, collie but I'm pretty sure no Labrador Harry pos a little bit. Have lots of fun Jen ;D
Re: well well well who would have thought it Oh Lynne I'm delighted....you will have a great time.im doing it for fun bit but you know it gets you.....first I just wanted him to run after the ball and bring it back now I want him to bring it back properly...I've just played with him like Heidrun was playing with Gwen and hes bringing it back much better and holding it until he gets to me, SOMETIMES even dropping it into my hand( I'm kneeling down on the floor mind you ;D) it doesn't matter he's only a pet like Jasper ,its great excercise though like Jen said and if you don't want jasper to do too much running, you could just do close by but tricky 'find its ' so he can have a root round in the grass but not be damaging himself with lots of running.id love Jasper to come to my party and do some of his tricks! CLever boy! Never mind asking for photos from others we want some of you in all you new gear when it arrives....looking as professional as Pippa and Heidrun!you will look the business xxx
Re: well well well who would have thought it i have been a bit confused , when i have seen talk of retrieving on the forum, i thought it meant retrieving birds and such, dont take much to confuse me. jasper as like a bone shape kong toy that is only for walks,...we throw that he brings it back and puts it in your hand waiting of his treat,......some times he just ignores it,... so it looks like we have started half the battle without even realising what we was doing this was taken last week when i got it out of my pocket,.. sorry just had to post this of my beautiful handsome boy
Re: well well well who would have thought it What a cutie-pie!! Looks like a new chapter in the Adventures of Lynne and Jasper is about to begin....drum roll.... It's all about having fun with your dog and doing things that he enjoys as well. My Border Collies loved the frisbee...it was great fun for them and good exercise too! Not sure what will be the "thing" that Simba and I will do - first I have to get a recall established before I can take him off-leash in the big wide world but then, who knows? Maybe I'll give a go at the retrieving thing too!
Re: well well well who would have thought it oh no doubt you will get bored when i start to waffle on .......i am lucky to have lasted on the forum so long i took my time with the recall, followed pippas book, ......he will recall really good ........the recall from another dog. well that's a different story slowly we are getting there oh wish we was fit enough to go and have a good run round the field
Re: well well well who would have thought it You see Lynne your doing retrieve already. I thought you would be in some form Labradors can't resist picking something up and fetching it. I bet indoors if somebody comes he picks something up to greet them. If he doesn't yet he will so mind what's lying around Murphy my old lab got through 2 remote controls before he had us trained ! Retrieve or fetch comes naturally to labs some like it more than others but it's in there somewhere. Still haven't worked out how to put pics on will have a go this weekend got loads of course . ;D Jen
Re: well well well who would have thought it He will be fit again Lynne, you are being so careful with him now...he is gorgeous, you picked very well when you picked him.....in fact how and why did you pick him.....thats probably a whole new thread isn't it?....... Why did you choose your particular puppy? I found the early exercises of recall from another dog hard to set up ,so we just had to go 'live' and I tried it out on walks with dogs we know but really close up to them when he was more or less coming back to me anyway.he got really consistent at it so i reduced the value of my rewards when I got back from the UK last week and I've had a couple of failed recalls ......most of them from other dogs.....one was from a dog that was barking behind a gate!!so I've upped the treats again...he's had a lazy day today, only lead walking and no training and only chewing his toys as play.....poor fella ,he's a bit happier now though x
Re: well well well who would have thought it jen there is a thread on how to put photos on......he only picks his toys up in the house, i think he knows that remote are out of bounds to him oh angela what a question when everyone got over the shock of me saying i would like a dog.......my son and i started to do some research on what type of dog would suit us.......mark would of loved a german sheaperd , he definitely did not want a small dog,.......so after a long lengthy debate we both agreed on a lab, i have a friend that breeds labs but had just sold his last litter, i told him we wanted a male, reason being i was worried about a bitch going in season with me never having a dog before i would not have a clue gary my friend was aware of how bad my fear was with dogs, ........he as bred labs all his life so knew what to look for,.....he picked 2 good breeders out for us who he knew well, he had arranged for us to visit both breeders,........we went to the first breeder where the litter of 8 , 4 boys 4 girls......gary had met both mother and father of the pups, mum black dad chocolate, mum was a sweet gentle little thing say small to medium size, dad big guy i was a bit frightened of picking the pups up with mum present, soon discovered i had no need to be as she was lovely ........mark handled all the male pups, where as i just stood back studying them,...i then chose the first one he had picked up.........he was 3 weeks old,.......so thats how we got the lovely jasper,...,,,,,,now please please dont ask me how we got his name
Re: well well well who would have thought it Ah Lynne thanks,im really interested to know ....we wouldn't change Dexter for the world but we didn't get to choose him so I'm always interested to know what that 'thing' is that makes you look at the litter and decide that puppy is 'the one'..........I've never seen a litter of puppies ,let alone picked one up! X
Re: well well well who would have thought it angela it was beautiful to see them,,.......in my heart i knew we was having the first one we touched, i will get mark to put me a photo on later its in his phone, the min we chose him
Re: well well well who would have thought it The hardest thing we did was refuse the first littler we visited. The pups had been taken off mum at 4 weeks, mum and dad where still at the house so we did see them. I just wasn't happy with the situation and environment. Said we could take puppy there and then and for a less than advertise price. After we said no, they rang with more money off. So we went home and used different words in the google search and found registered breeders. Amy was the last off the littler near to us. The day we picked her up the second breeder we rang, rang us to say her puppies had just been born.
Re: well well well who would have thought it Ah sounds like little Amy was waiting for you Jade...first breeder sounds awful and desperate...that was a moneymaking venture if ever there was one .did the boys go with you to see her?x
Re: well well well who would have thought it Oh Lynne,he is a little gorgeous scrap there isn't he,can't believe that little puppy has grown into your huge Jasper...yep,it was definately a foregone conclusion once Mark had hold of him!...now go on ,tell us how you came by Jasper? X
Re: well well well who would have thought it well i got home after we chose him, had no idea of a name,,,,,,,,,so put on face book, names for pup please, .....got an endless list of names,......jasper jumped out at me ;D
Re: well well well who would have thought it jade amy was so meant to be with you,.........shes beautiful
