Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded that is good news, keep resting Tarka! hopefully Charlie's spa trip will improve him no end too I'm currently trying to stop Riley playing with my in-laws 35kgs lab Monty....and trying to work : : : the toast I have on my plate is helping though - talk about focus! ;D
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded and kudos for carrying Tarka for 70 minutes - no chance of that happening here!! I will be fascinated to see what comes of filming Charlie. Not sure it's the film career he was hoping for but it would be brilliant if it helps them diagnose the problem
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Poor Tarka - and so much resting ahead! She must be dying to run already, I know Charlie is.
I will be fascinated to see what comes of filming Charlie. Not sure it's the film career he was hoping for but it would be brilliant if it helps them diagnose the problem
I hope it'll be interesting. I invited Charlie's PANK (professional aunt no kids) to come along to do the photos as I don't want to be distracted from what's going on by taking them. She said she couldn't take half a day off work as she has a Board meeting. Huh. She needs to think about her priorities, I think. ;D ;D ;D Hopefully I'll get some snaps in the pool at least.
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded All these poor injured pups. I hope they are all back racing around and causing you all trouble very soon. Jen
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Hope lovely Riley will be back to full strength soon. Rest up Riley x
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded
and kudos for carrying Tarka for 70 minutes - no chance of that happening here!! Er no, not carrying her x 70 mins, she walks at heel for 20 mins then lies on the field doing steadiness training, long stays, etc and I just carry her up and down the hill at the start and end. Wish I could carry a 25kg lab x 70 minutes though.....
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Glad to hear that she's improving And I feel less inadequate now that you have clarified that you did not carry your dog for over an hour...
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Big relapse here - Charlie is getting worse, not better. Spoken to the vet this morning and he is back on anti-inflammatories. The vet thinks that the previous batch might have been hiding symptoms, so when he came off them it appears he is getting worse. Plus the increased exercise, slight though it's been, has been too much. So we are now back on painkillers and anti-inflammatories, and back to a very, very, strict rest regime - for a minimum of 2 weeks. He might not even be able to do his hydrotherapy on Tuesday, but the physio therapist will decide on the day after she has examined him. He is going to go nuts. He is allowed "round the block walks" and nothing else. Keep away from other dogs even when he is on his lead. I've even got to keep the clicker training to things that do not involve him getting up and down from a sit or a down - so that's pretty much the end of that, really. I can't keep doing watch me and leave it all the time. I can work on steadiness. (Any suggestions gratefully received by the way). Taking him out in the car, but without a walk at the end of it, seemed to make him more frustrated. I'll have to cut his food down to 200g a day - and some of that has to be in a bowl because he has to take the medication with food - as getting heavier is not going to help. I'll go into mass produced frozen kongs filled with veggies and things. I've ordered some puzzle games things - you know, move the slots to find the kibble. I'll move my workstation into the kitchen so he can stay in his pen more, but still see me. What else? He isn't well behaved enough to go out like Tarka and sit quietly in a field, unfortunately. I can't give him toys because he jumps around like a kitten, he finds toys so exciting. I really worry this boredom is not good for his mind.
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded so sorry to hear this julie, poor charlie and you,......i had the same for 6 weeks, i found it very hard,....i just sat on the floor with him and massaged him for an hour a time, that seemed to help, can t give you any advice, you seem to be doing every thing you can,.....jasper was not aloud to go the spa......good luck julie......i feel your pain
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded
.jasper was not aloud to go the spa......
Thank you Lynne. Whether Charlie is allowed to swim depends on whether it's likely to be soft tissue damage or a joint sprain. With luck, we might have a better idea of that on Tuesday. Hope so anyway. It would be good if he can swim, at least then he'd get some form of exercise.
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Oh no, poor lad and poor you too , I was really hoping for better news , so sorry Julie x
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Sorry to hear that Julie. Poor Charlie. We know you will do your very best for him. Will he just chill out if you are not actively engaging him? I know Lilly does. The attraction of my bed is far greater than my company if I am not playing with her. Often when the fire is on in the lounge too
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded
Will he just chill out if you are not actively engaging him?
Only for a bit. Once he's done snoozing (about 2 hours in the morning, and 2 in the afternoon) he goes looking for mischief - basically nicking or chewing things, which stops me working. I can get him to stay on a mat, but not forever. So then I put him in his pen. And he stands looking through the bars, waiting to be let out, and recently has started crying again like a tiny puppy (which I ignore, of course). Eventually he'll go back to sleep in his pen, but not for a good while.
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Poor Charlie. It must be so disappointing for you Julie. Hopefully the physio will think he's fit to swim on Tuesday. That will do him a lot of good and also tire him out. Fingers crossed Jen
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Really sorry to hear that things are going the wrong way. My two will settle with me for extended periods - but I do mean 'with me'. It's them and me and a balanced laptop on the sofa... might not see you achieve what you need to workwise! As far as brain games go to keep him happy - apart from commands in a different language / identifying favourite toys by name / matching items, I can't think of anything, and I know these are not the sort of things you (and Charlie) particularly enjoy. Does he ever show much interest in the television??? They started that channel in the USA, didn't they, specially for dogs... Wonder if he'd have any interest in programmes with lots of dogs? Victoria Stilwell could be his new best friend... Sorry, no help really. Best wishes for recovery though, and hope he does get a swim next week after all. Clare
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded He just woke up from his morning snooze - time to go outside on a lead for a pee. He couldn't really walk. The vet is seeing us at 3.30pm. We'll have to carry him. So worried now.
Thanks Clare - I'll have to have a think about things to do, like them or not, thanks for the suggestions. I really am not exaggerating when I tell you that yesterday, Charlie sat on my head when I was working on my laptop on the sofa. He is young and a hooligan. He will settle, but just not for very long. Nowhere near all day. more interesting than a laptop by JulieTandCharlie, on Flickr
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Dogs can also be interested in laptops... Yes, all balanced on my lap at the time. 133 by CNJ34, on Flickr Sending hugs. Let us know how you get on at the vets. Keep telling yourself that you know what it is NOT, thanks to the x-rays and that anything else can and will be sorted, even if it is not what you and Charlie would want in the meantime. xx Clare
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Oh grim!!! poor Charlie and poor you. You have my and Rileys sympathy, he's not doing a wall of death but he's bored stupid and everytime you move a millimetre he looks up in hope
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Oh Julie I am so sorry, what a dreadful worry. Poor Charlie - and poor you...
