Thanks Helen, I will try that next time :) although I wasn't at all confident (and still aren't) that this was the cause of the lameness so over cautious, first time owner that I am I'd probably have gone to the vet anyway :D

So Riley's pads are healing up reasonably well. The vet said not to expect it to be fast as they'll keep breaking open as he walks and I definitely can't keep him off his feet! However there is definite improvement and he's not flinching when I bathe his feet any more. The limp is very mild but that may just be the painkillers, we're on short on-lead walks for the next few days so as not to take any risks.....it's just not worth it.

Hope Charlie and Tarka are doing as well as can be hoped x

Any idea what caused it? I worry about pads as the weather gets bad, as the pavements are heavily salted in London...

Charlie is still limping very badly, but not as bad as yesterday...that might be all the painkillers though...he looks tragic, hardly able to put weight on it at all. (Which doesn't stop him prancing and dancing along in an adrenaline fuelled rush when he gets to go "round the block" ::) ).

Not really but we were on pretty rough ground on Thursday plus it was cold which may have made his pads more brittle(?) the cuts were basically existing creases in his pads that had split.

The vet did say I could put olive oil on his pads to soften them but if I wanted to work him I should just let him toughen up :)

When the roads and pavements are salted I always wash Riley's paws off after a walk as the salt is really bad for them if they lick their paws.

Julie and Barbara, I just wanted to say I hope both Charlie and Riley turn a corner soon. Tarka too of course. It must be really horrid and difficult for all of you. Xx

There is lots of flint around here and that is always the cause of cut pads with Hattie :(

Here's hoping that Riley and Choc Charlie get better really soon for their sakes and yours  xx :*

I'll make sure I wash paws when salty, thanks.

I will. I'll tell him if he wants another day when he gets to walk with hero Riley, AND then a gundog lesson - I think he thought it was Christmas that day - he has to be good!

Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded

Just caught up with this... So sorry that Charlie is still having troubles :(

My first Lab tore a muscle in his left rear leg (i.e. tore part of it away from the bone it was attached to) when he stood right up on his hind legs against a fence one day (to bark at the dog on the other side). He could not really use the leg initially, not so much because it hurt but because the muscle just wasn't able to do its job of moving the relevant bone properly. At first we thought he was paralysed in that leg somehow as he couldn't stand up at all. He eventually improved and went to on to do Flyball for the next four years (a sport that requires a very high level of fitness) and he never had another problem with it. It was terribly worrying though but eventually it was just a memory. I barely even remember the painful process of keeping him quiet while it healed.... He was already a very quiet dog so we were lucky in that respect. Obi, in contrast, would be a nightmare.

Big hugs and pats to all!

TARKA IS SOUND THIS MORNING!!!!!!!!!First time in weeks she is getting about without a trace of a limp and she has had no anti-inflammatories x 5 days either. You've no idea how pleased I am........just a few weeks more rest and care then some rehab. Might even have her back to fitness by February......oh, such a good morning......

That's great. Well done! Be good Tarka...

What will you do in terms of rehab?

I hope that our rehab is before February, but I'm reconciled now to it taking as long as it takes. What I'm not going to do is take his lead off in an exciting wood (impression of crazy jumping jack would immediately result). So thinking hard about how we'll shift from lead walks to off lead...

woo hoo one injured pup on the way!

Julie I so know what you mean about the jumping jack tendances of dogs on rest when allowed off lead...... when I let Cuillin got off her lead after ten days of rest post spay, the words of vet sister echoing in my head - just make sure she takes it easy- the lead came off, ptannnggg Cuillin shot off like a rocket, did circular sprinting round me in wider and wider circles like a crazed Catherine Wheel. you know, that full throttle, all legs of the ground at once sprinting, then leapt about like a loon. all attempts at stopping her failed....

Yup, that'll be it...it's hard enough now stopping him doing that round the kitchen when I open his pen...

Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded

Barbara and Julie, I just got an email from our vet, with a suggestion that if pavements near you have been salted and gritted, that putting protective cream on your dog's paws can help protect them. She suggested vaseline or a thick cream.

So glad Lochan is feeling better!
