Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Bit of an off loading post... So when we got to see the physio (see below), she said Charlie was "much worse" than she was expecting, and kept asking me the order of the vet appointments - turns out, the vet I saw on Saturday hadn't updated the report to the physio. So after a lot of examination, took close to an hour, and a bucket full of treats to keep Charlie still, the physio decided there wasn't anything she could do. She wasn't at all convinced that there isn't joint instability, so physio or hydro isn't an option. Plus, she said Charlie was in too much discomfort for physio - and she didn't think it was a simple case of a muscle injury. She told me to go back to the vet and she would email them a report. Now losing confidence in the vets.... I must have expressed this a bit, as she said I must see the orthopedic specialist. So I've got an appointment for tomorrow night. I would have gone tonight, but she said she couldn't prepare her report that fast. I just wish I knew where to take Charlie so I knew he was in good hands. Well, I'll see the specialist tomorrow, then have a think. Plus, just to make it a really rubbish day....when I got to the physio/hydro place there was a mix up with appointment, had an hour's wait. Charlie going nuts through lack of exercise and general over-excitement at being in a new place with other dogs and lots of people. Doing my best to sit and calm down or walk calmly up and down. Got grumpy at the number of owners who let their dogs pull them over to us when Charlie was being naughty. I had to keep saying "no, we won't say hello if that's ok". Every last person said "isn't he friendly then?". Ugg. Wanted to scream. But I didn't. Just tried to smile (I suspect I failed) and said, "he doesn't get to say hello when he is over excited".
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Oh goodness what a trial !!!! I hope the ortho appointment goes much, much better. Will you have Charlie's x-rays to show him/her? I know your physio must be honest but it sounds like her bedside manner could do with a little polish and blaming the vet for lack of info isn't helpful. Big hugs for you and the lovely boy x
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded julie did charlie have c t scans, or was it just x rays ?
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Oh heck Julie , I really am sorry , what a blasted nightmare , poor you and poor Charlie too , thinking of you all x
Yes, he's the head honcho at the existing practice so he'll have everything. He's already seen Charlie's x-rays (he was the one who said Charlie had fab hips). But he hasn't examined the troublesome joint himself. The physio didn't have the best bedside manner, it's true - but I'd say she knew what she was doing. She spent ages on the examination. Much, much, longer than any of the vets have.
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded I had knee issues a while ago and the professionals disagreed on what was wrong. After the surgeon had been in and had a root around he said some people wouldn't have had problems but I'm a sensitive soul and the cartilage damage I had stopped me competing so needed sorting. I guess sometimes these things aren't an exact science :-\ You know you're getting healing vibes from us x
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Ah Julie ,just getting up to speed now,bit of a curve ball for you,and a pretty exhausting day too for both you and Charlie by the sounds of it. See what the Ortho says,he's a fresh set of eyes and an expert,I know it's really disappointing when you thought there was a definite diagnosis, now you find you are still going through an elimination process but keep faith, you have the X-ray results that tell you there is nothing untowards .....this will get fixed I'm sure x
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded I know, but it's been nearly 4 weeks now...and we don't know what's wrong - I feel if it's a ligament, then there is some urgency to treat it properly, not keep messing about. It's rubbish timing too. Just as I need to be working super hard on Charlie's hooligan tendencies while he is a teenager. I worry all this inactivity, boredom, and no proper training is doing him no good at all.
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Don't worry about the long term behavioral effects - there won't be any. He's being a handful at the moment, but it's a temporary state. So sorry to hear that now there are further questions to be answered That's not what we all want!! Hope you get a useful assessment at the ortho. I guess the good thing is that you have these specialists readily available in London. Good news that Riley has improved
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Julie and Barbara, thinking of both of you and sending healing vibes to Riley and Charlie. Xx
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Oh Julie, so sorry you have more to worry about. Thinking of you and Barbara and your boys. xxxxx
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Rachael is absolutely right, Charlie won't suffer long term. I reckon Riley had b****r all training for about 3 months at around a year old when I had Lizzie and he's turning out ok (if I do say so myself ) not everyone's perfect dog but a great family pet and every now and then we look like we can do some retrieving. Lots of love, chin up x Ps Riley's been chowing down on grass so I'm expecting the chicken and rice to reappear
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Oh Julie, so sorry to hear this. I know you are frustrated, wanting to get to the bottom of the injury and also seeing all the frustration Charlie goes through having to be kept quiet all the time. I do hope you have some solid answers soon and a definite course of treatment. Barbara, glad to hear Riley is on the upswing....
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Good luck, check in later with news Julie. Thinking about Riley too Barbara x
The positive spin on this is that he is not getting any opportunity for testosterone-fuelled mad behaviour out on the common and discovering just what fun that can be... Yes, I know, that's really reaching when it comes to trying to find a positive! Hope you make progress today - I think, as Barbara said, the professionals don't always agree, but the orthopaedic specialist should be able to inject some clarity. Good luck. Hope Riley is done with the up chucking too! Clare
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Ok, well, it's not good. Cruciate ligament is snapped. So that's an operation (but not yet, because he is too young) and then months, and months, of rest. Bit cut up, so won't write more now. Need to think about it all.
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Oh Julie , I really am so so so sorry , not surprising that you are distressed , my thoughts are with you and yours , I cant say any more but here if you need me x
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Hugs and love from us Let me know if there's anything we can do x
Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded Oh Julie,I'm sorry........my tummy turned over reading your post....come and talk when you've collected your thoughts about it ,it's really awful luck xxxxxx
