Oh, Julie, that totally sucks :( Massive hugs.

I've had several friends deal with this with young dogs. It works out fine in the end (though I know that all that is on your mind at the moment are the crappy present and middle bits.....).

    My thoughts are with you.

So sorry to hear that julie, poor you and charlie.

A SAR dog tore his crutiate ligament last year and he made a full recovery and is back to full fitness and back on the call out list, his recovery took a couple of months, but was soon doing light work with the agreement with the vet.

Julie, I'm so terribly sorry. You'll get through this with Charlie, but this is a horrible setback for you, I do realize. :'(
    Huge hugs to you both.

So sorry, what a B. I am sure that when can have the op all will be well, have known several dogs have the op and have also watched several being repaired. I do feel for you though with all the rest he will have to have, rotten bad luck.

Re: We've joined the ranks of the lame and wounded

Thanks all - I'm feeling less emotional about it now, and getting organised booking the specialists that I want Charlie to see before I make my mind up about what type of operation, who is going to do it, and when (because he is so young, the answer is not necessarily as soon as possible).

It's a busy day, clearing work, so I'm free to drive up and down the country getting Charlie to where he needs to be next week, and rearranging holiday plans to be in step free places. But I'll post more later.

Just to say thanks for the messages and support, including all the PMs - very much appreciated.

Hey, if its any help or comfort at work we have a cruciate ligament repair most weeks, small, large and giant dogs! They all seem to recover incredibly well, we are also very lucky to have a very good orthopaedic surgeon :) Have they said which surgical options there are? For large dogs we carry out a procedure called an MMP and they recover amazingly well!! Also every vet is different but post operatively hydrotherapy can really aid recovery :) Hope im not butting in :)

Not to be left out - Poppy has ripped one of her claws and is on lead walks only for a week! No training, no retrieving, no running about with friends. Ho hum… :(

Nowhere near as serious as many of you - but I know from experience that this needs to be treated carefully. She was a bit lame this morning; took her to the vet who clipped the claw, prescribed lead walks, and gave her pain killers. It happened a couple of times with my old boys, and I know if you don't watch out the claw can continue to split right down into the nail bed. Poor old Billy even had to have a claw pulled one time (no fun).
