I'm so pleased with Juno today. We have been on a "balade educative" with our dog trainer, and her 2 dogs, late this afternoon to a venue we haven't visited before and with a new dog joining us for the fun. I've never really tested Juno's recall when we are out in the group but she amazed me today - she recalled from somewhere in the woods, appearing around a tree trunk as I called for the second time, she recalled when playing with the dogs, recalled instead of jumping in the pond and recalled when I whistled to gain her attention, which was surprising as I'm useless at whistling . She looked to me on the first whistle and started running to me as I peeped a second time. What a good girl she is. She is now sound asleep on my feet after an hour of charging around through woods, fields, orchards and having a splash in the pond with her furry friends.
The funny part is having 3 other dogs come running as well when they realise that there are treats on offer
When younger Juno would run off with other dogs but then come back and check-in before going off again. Since resuming the walks after her surgery I had noticed she wasn't checking back the same, so gambled on the recall and was just so pleased with her response. Rosanne, our trainer, was impressed as well
A strong recall is a wonderful, wonderful thing. Yesterday lunchtime we went for a BBQ and I took the dogs for a stroll up a hill as DH was cooking our meat. They like to play "ping pong" between the two of us and I use this as a recall training game. One time, though, as they were hooning towards him, I saw he had just taken a breast of duck off the fire. Hot, juicy duck + 2 Labradors = no lunch for us. So, I blew my recall. From full flight towards him, they spun and galloped back towards me. Everyone was most impressed. Myself included So, well done to you and Juno and revel in everyone's admiration. It makes up for the times they're a little less than perfect
Great recall from tasty duck breast I think it always helps to play recall games, Juno loves them. We love them when their recall isn't so good, but when they respond well we just swell with love and pride
I am absolutely thrilled to read your topic this morning, I'm really pleased for you and Juno. I think you're doing a brilliant job and Juno is a star. It gives me hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel after surgery. Mabel sends Labrador licks to Juno.
If you had asked me 3 months I would have said that I didn't think we would ever have fun again after the verdict of ED and going into the operation with 8 weeks of recovery. Now, I'm more positive and accept that ED is a lifetime condition but life does and must go on - just have to be more careful and moderate activities. After yesterday's energetic walk, run, gallop and play we will have a quieter day today. So don't lose heart, count the days down and mark each visit to the vet etc. for checks as a milestone and you'll be surprised how quickly the time goes. Juno sends licks backs to Mabel and says to tell her to listen to you cos you care and love her and want to keep her safe
