After snowbunny 's recent post about her poor underfed, skinny dogs ;) I got thinking about the comments I have received from strangers. I think the best was a lady that came up to my purebred chocolate girl Ella and said "what a lovely Staffy you have". I thanked her but politely mentioned that she was actually a Labrador and not a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The lady then proceeded to tell me that "if there's any Labrador in there it must only be a tiny amount because I know Staffy's and she's predominantly Staffy".

Ok lady, whatever you think

Surely we're not the only ones to be told nutty things by a complete stranger?

"Oh he's so cute, he's obviously a mix of some sort." Multiple people have thought Myles was a mix. In the US, field labs are far more common and that is what most are used to seeing. So his bigger head and stockier build throws them off.

I have had lots of questions about what breed Chepi is; I should print an information sheet to hand out.

Hehe, you think you have problems, try taking ferrets for a walk! I bought them T-shirts one year (for a joke, they hate to wear them so I don't force them!), saying "I'm a ferret, you moron!" and "I'm not a f***ing rodent!" :D

No one believes Rory is a lab because he's so rangy they always think he is a pointer cross. I just smile to myself there are so many "experts" out there. Been told his ears are too big too but he's finally grown into them. Tails too long apparently and too curved. He's starting to fill out now as he's nearly 2 maybe they will think he's a mastiff next?

I also keep on being asked what breed Jura is as she is a dark fox red lab, and there's not that many of them around where we are.

I was once told by a man that she was a bit thin for a lab pup, but thankfully the chap he was with told him quite firmly "no that's what labs are supposed to look like, yours was fat!"

Oh, well if we're talking breed standards, mine are so far from the mark, it's ridiculous! Shadow has fluffy bloomers and a fluffy tail. He did a pretty good impression of a GR the other day :D

My fairly slim 'red' lab indisputably has at least some ridgeback in him according to most people we meet out and about , or he's the most handsome, well proportioned labrador they've ever seen. We win some and loose some.

I also get told what a well behaved dog he is when we do a sit and wait in our regular spot, but they haven't seen him pull my shoulder out while walking to the park, or him charging around the house with my knicker! :)

It used to really upset me that people didn't believe Poppy is a labrador. I wanted to whip out her pedigree and show them! Now I don't care at all...

we have one very strange and twisted indiviual (she hates any minority and race other than her own) on the park I use who is going to report me to the RSPCA and spread vile rumors about me because my 18 old lab bitch was too thin (in herr opinion). I caught her at it one day and told her that her dogs were obese and that my vet thinks my pup is perfect for her age and she could ring him a speak to him if she wanted too. I also explained that her dogs were running the risk of a number of health problems because of her over feeding and that because her dogs weren't normal so she did not know a healthy dog when she saw one.
I have another young dog at the moment and I know there are whispers going around about me starving him but my vets thinks he's in great shape so I just laugh when I this stuff now. Its very hurtful though, I make sure my labs are the correct weight for there size and they are really healthy and have been healthy and fit into old age and get treated as if I'm doing something wrong.

Yes I feel your pain on that!

I've also had the "What is she crossed with?" question. She's a working/field lab and small with it with a fairly pointy nose and several people won't believe she is 100% lab. On the plus side most comments are about how pretty she is or how well behaved she is.

Seems that the French are more polite. Our usual comments are "Elle est une Labrador, oui? Elle est magnifique!"

Great topic, made me smile so much. It's infuriating when the whole world has an opinion, usually wrong. I regularly get asked if she's a lab. Yesterday someone said I think you're wrong her pedigree is false. The worst was a week after her surgery when someone said oh I love her unusual markings. I replied that it was where she had been shaved after elbow surgery. Lady's reply 'I don't think so, she a picture of health she hasn't got anything wrong with her your lying".
