Great trip out to the Common - bit busy on the end of a Saturday afternoon, but Charlie was doing very well. I popped him on lead when I heard a football game, and we watched for a bit, then found a quiet spot to do our training. On the way back towards one of the busier fields, I could hear people playing, so put him back on lead until I could see what was happening.

Remote controlled cars. He went nuts! Really nuts! Lunging and playing up dreadfully on his lead. I had to walk away with him.....

Why can my dog sit when he flushes birds, stay in a sit-wait as a rabbit runs across the field, walk at heel off lead around deer, ignore cats....(and now, after much effort, ignore joggers, people on bikes, skates and skateboards) but can't walk past a moving remote controlled car? It's not like he has ever got to fetch or play with a remote controlled car. Why would it be so irresistible to him? :-\

::) ::) ::) It must be ingrained in him "new, might be a toy, moving, gotta go jump on it...".

Mine also! You should be thrilled with all the things you have steadied him to :) Just have to acclimatise him to something new and very exciting, after all he is a chap and they love to tinker with mechanics!

Sigh....I'll put remote control cars on my list of things to learn not to jump on. I'm sure OH will be keen enough to buy one to help with the training. ::)

They are ever so big, like 4 wheel drive truck things and move really fast, taking off over bumps. Obviously not as big a a real 4 wheel drive truck, but they are serious bits of kit. I hope it's not a new craze...I'm barely managing to keep up the leave footballs alone training.

Philippa Willams and her team used a remote control car with a stuffed rabbit strapped to it as a distraction in the Crufts demo. It was quite funny! :)

    ;D ;D ;D

I'll hold the rabbit until I do the car alone! But I'll aim for a rabbit on it in time....

I seriously cannot believe I've got to buy a remote controlled car now. But how else am I going to train it? Charlie just does not generalise "don't chase and jump on that" - at all!

I suppose if remote control car racing is going to be a regular thing on the common then yes you will have to buy one to proof Charlie but in general how often do you come across remote control cars ? ;D

It's the third time only...but his reaction was really quite bad. It was as bad the last two times, but I put that down to him being super excited just coming off restricted exercise.

I haven't seen him react like this in his pet dog environment for months - and it was worse than watching spaniels hunt, although maybe about the same as the first time we watched spaniels hunt - my trainer says he is a pet, so is well controlled as a pet in his day job, but our challenges are staying in control in environments that he doesn't get to do everyday. Remote controlled cars obviously fall in that bucket....

Do you have any neighbours with young or maybe not so young boys who might have remote control cars you could borrow. Then again as you've said I'm sure your OH will agree that buying a remote control car is an important part of Charlie's training. ;)

It's a shame you don't live nearer I could provide you with numerous remote control vehicles of various size and type including a plane and a helicopter all residing in the farm workshop somewhere once the novelty wears off. ::)

    LOLOL.

Next your OH will be paying Charlie to become uncontrollable around Italian supercars so he can buy one of them too....strictly to benefit the dog of course ;)

My Heinz 57, Boogie, used to chase (flying) birds - ears a-flapping as if he could take off and join them!
