hi any advise welcome on whats the best harness for meg,she is still pulling on the lead and its starting to hurt me now, thanks
Re: whats the best harness for meg Hi there, I think the best option is really to train your dog NOT to pull on the lead, which I know is easier said than done. Its hard work, and takes a while to achieve no pulling. There are quite a lot of posts about pulling on the lead, this one is short but has a couple of very useful links and suggestions from Julie and Kate. There are a wide variety of harnesses on the market, and if your dog REALLY pulls, possibly a padded one might be helpful, and one with a "D-ring" on the front to allow a lead to be attached to the chest area is often helpful for dogs that pull. There is an article on the main site discussing collars and harnesses here. I think Pippa recommended The Easy Walk Dog Harness in this article, and this has one of the front fastening rings, but isn't padded. A Gentle Leader head collar seems to be popular and effective too. You will probably get as many suggestions as people you ask though! Hope this gives you some help.
Re: whats the best harness for meg Hi there, We had a similar problem with Ozzie and our trainer at puppy class told us about this harness: www.mekuti.co.uk Ozzie is great on a lead now Hope this helps
Re: whats the best harness for meg i tried both the front ring and back ring harness, the only thing that stops no pulling is to train not to pull it takes a lot of time and patience,
Re: whats the best harness for meg hi thanks for eveyones advise and links,we are training meg not to pull on every walk she has,and im afraid it is easier said than done :the reason why i am struggling with it is that i have atharitis in most of my joints,so thats why it hurts,i have done most of the suggestions with meg,and feel that a harness would be more suitable for when i take her out for a slow donder, its worth a try to let me enjoy my walks with meg.
Re: whats the best harness for meg I use a front and back D ring harness similar to the one mentioned above. I have spinal problems so can't have Harley pull me. This harness has been brilliant as they can't lunge as you can gently pull them towards you from the front. I now have Harley walking nicely about 80% of the time.......new places are the difficult ones that take time. Good luck.
Re: whats the best harness for meg Also considering a different harness for Ruby. We're working on the walking loosely on the lead training but there are times when she sees a pigeon or something and just lunges. I take it we can just continue with the loise lead training if we get a harness with a D ring at the front too?
Re: whats the best harness for meg i use the easy walk one with the front clip for orion... it has a martingale loop on the front so when/if your meg pulls, it turns her back toward you. if she refuses to turn or keeps trying to bulldoze through it (as my orion did the first time the harness was on), her front legs will be squooshed together a bit (harmlessly) so she cannot really move forward. i have combined this with nice-walk-manners training... so it's important not to use it as a crutch or replacement for proper walk training. it can be an invaluable tool in that training - getting meg to understand proper manners and when she walks loosely/near you with the harness, lots of praise and treats... she'll pick it up quickly, and soon you won't need the harness any longer.
