8 months old - selective hearing, refusing to eat dog food wanting only people food, forgetting recall, "forgetting" polite manners....and that's just in the last couple of weeks....I wonder what else is in store for us!
10 months for Harley. Her recall went to pot, she would bark for attention, want to run over to every dog/person she seen, wouldn't follow basic training things such as sit and wait, lots of energy, struggled to settle. Hers only lasted until she was 12 months as she had emergency surgery and appeared to calm down.
Axel is 10 months and has started to jump up on us when we come home. He has never done this, so it is annoying. And he's 40kg so it kind of hurts. So far that's it but I'm sure more will start here shortly!
I'm dreading adolescence. Stanley's just starting to improve and settle much more. I don't want him to get bad again
Phew, I thought it might be too early. Well, then I don't know what's going on with my not-quite five month old at the moment. It hit like a freight train yesterday. She is completely off the wall. I'm exhausted, sick, and on deadline, which doesn't help, but I've been running her around outside as much as I can, playing with her, doing training, etc. She finally just settled for maybe only the second time today. She did just lose her two lower back molars; does teething bother them much? I never noticed it with my other dogs. It's more a crazy burst of energy and inability to settle down.
Around 8-9 months we started noticing some changes - recall got pretty bad, barking and/or snapping her teeth at us for things she wants, pulling on lead, chewing toys up, stealing things from table tops etc (she never did either up til that age)...that's about it. She's 11 months now, so still in prime adolescence...
Jeeze alll this puppy behaviour and the "it gets easier coments" then i see the adolescence behaviours
Benson was 8 months, everything became so much interesting than me...we have come out the other end..just and I wouldn't change him for the world. Bramble is 10 months old, and has recently turned into a diva with attitude!
Ella was about 12 months old. I was feeling little smug prior to this as we glided through the 8-12 month period so I started to wonder if we'd managed to skip the whole "adolescent" period.
I am not quite sure that Charlie was ever anything but an adolescent! I think he came that way. And I'm not sure he grew out of it either!
Geez, at 4 months, we're still in major puppy mode. Sounds like adolescence will be about the same. Maybe there will be something good in between these 2 stages. Right now, it's tough. Now we've had to start putting stuff further and further back on the kitchen counter. I've only had small dogs before and not a big dog who can stand on their hind legs and reach stuff they shouldn't!
@babs75 - still in puppy mode here too, but B's generally been a relatively chill pup. I can leave her loose in the house for up to 5-10 minutes and she doesn't chew inappropriate things - generally doesn't chew inappropriately. She's not quite there with house training but 80% of the time rings the bell by the door to tell me she needs to go out. Poops outside 99% of the time. Most of her biting ended by 10-12 weeks, except for my ankles on the way back into the house from a walk/play/outing, and occasionally hands when she's SUPER excited. She still jumps on people when greeting if I let her (I try not to), but has been getting better at sitting or having all four on the floor because I've asked people to be consistent not giving her attention if she's got her front paws on them. She counter surfs relentlessly but listens to "off" and if I'm in the kitchen, she will maybe 50-70% of the time offer a down either at my feet or on the rug just outside the kitchen, knowing that gets rewarded with treats or a bit of whatever I'm cooking. But I have to keep leftovers, butter, etc, off the counters all the time or she'll try for them when I'm not in the kitchen. She easily goes from 10:30pm to 8am without going outside, sleeps from around 8pm to 8am generally (I take her out before I go to bed but she's sleepy). She walks SO nicely on a loose lead; her off-leash recall is 100% and enthusiastic outdoors; she knows sit, down, paw, leave it, off, look at me. So I thought we were doing pretty well - crate/ex pen training is still rough, I really still can't reliably build her up past 5 minutes of quiet in either one. Sometimes she'll go longer, but sometimes not. Haven't given up. Generally when I need to work I can take both dogs out, let them romp and play, pee and poop, come in, tell them "it's nap time," and both settle on the couch, her draped over my feet and my older dog next to me. But the past two days it's been crazy. She's bouncing around like she's on springs, doing the butt-tuck zoomies all day (previously had just an evening bout and sometimes a morning one too), and she won't leave my older dog alone, or she's trying to get into stuff she shouldn't and chew it (slippers, etc), or ringing the bell to go out even though we just came in.
Ugh, 8 months you say? My mum's pet sitting for a week over New Year...at 8.5 months. I will pray to the gods both old and new for adolescence to wait until at least 9 months.
My parents took Quinn for a week at that exact age - she was a good girl! Maybe they are like kids...always behave better away from home
Looks like we have 2 month before our Jesse hits this lovely age lol. Our new Baby Bella is a little monster already, as for oh we already trained her to sit and stay . We finally learned we don't get snacks unless we sit and take it nice not like a snapping turtle lol. I am still getting used how rough they play with each other. We had a few times outs for stealing and trying to chew on things. Time for more Bitter apple spray.
We had our second obedience class last night. She was so excited to see the other dogs but kept trying to play with the one next to us the entire class! Working on loose leash training and 'leave it'. She picks up on new concepts really fast. For the last 10 minutes, the dogs got to socialize in the play room. Libby was definitely the most rambunctious and was a little overwhelming for some of the dogs. Then got a bad case of the zoomies and had everyone laughing. Class clown........
