Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? Oh Charlie.....sorry for your ears little puppy and sorry for your podgy tummy ......he'll even out now Julie and you know the vet only confirmed what instinct was telling you so you'll never let him get too far wrong.Did the vet say why he is suffering with his ears?
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? I think that's right Angela - also think as we leave tomorrow for Cornwall, and we have a beach on our doorstep, plus sea breezes, like you said he'll get a lot more exercise than he has been having over the last week or so. I had a long discussion with her about the ears (and the previous eye thing) - I asked her whether they might be related, and she thought possibly, it could be an allergy thing. Or, it's just an ear infection that's taking a while to clear up - they can be very tricky apparently. She said it wasn't bad, just a bit inflamed, but best to try knock it on the head with more ABs and cleaning then let it get worse. I came away loaded down with wormers, saline, syringes, ABs... all stocked up for the long holiday... darn it, now I've written that I've realised I need more advocate. Oh well, I was going to register him with a vet in Cornwall anyway, so I'll do that and get some. Feel like a walking pharmacy...
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? I know you will sound like you are rattling with all that medication .....when Dex was 5 months he had 2 courses of back to back ab's and the vet told me to go to the pharmacy and buy a child's probiotic to put some goodness back in his tummy...finished the pack now so can't tell you which one it was....did it do any good?not noticeably .did it do any harm?not noticeably ....but it made sense to be about him being stripped of all the good bacteria, maybe ask if you have to go back for the advocate ...have a lovely holiday ,I know you will get amazing photos so post some when you can x
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? Oh poor Charlie , I dont know where in Pasty Land you will be Julie but I can PM you the details of my lovely Vet in Liskeard if you like
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? We got told to use probiotic yoghurt and I'd say the same - no noticeable difference either way Have a great time in Cornwall, I hope Charlie feels better soon!
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? Yes, please, Kate - it would be a bit of a drive, but I'll travel for a recommended vet. Can you PM me? I'll look into the yoghurt - might have to be diet version!
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? Oh dear Julie. Really hope you have a wonderful and trouble-free holiday!
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? I find it near impossible to get hd done to perfect. i never ever see rib. it's frustrating as i over feed her when she was younger which means that i now have weight to remove. i reduced her food down quite a bit and got the worst of it off fairly fast but i can't get her to the point where i see rib. every time i go to dog training, i'm told i should see rib when she turns. she needs to lose weight. i'm telling you, she'll be living on air soon the poor thing. they're all made totally differently. it's amazing they're all just one breed. hd weighs around the 23kg mark. should be 22kg i reckon. we're having another go at getting there. :-[ sarah
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? I may be wrong here only ever owning one dog but sometimes I think their coats have an impact on what you see and I trust what I feel a lot more and run my hands over Riley to see how close his ribs and backbone are to the surface. His coat is on the coarser side of lab coats and as a result when I thought he was just a touch thin you couldn't see his ribs particularly(unless he folded himself in half) but you could definitely feel them and his backbone. If she has a waist from above and you can feel her ribs without too much covering I wouldn't worry too much (just my opinion though )
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? I've been wondering whether some dogs are what my old yorkshire riding instructor used to call my horse "a good do'er" - kept weight and condition with very little food and even in poor grassland, in the same conditions my friend's horse (a nervous sort, constantly twitching) was as thin as a rake!
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? I think there is an element of that Julie, I know some people struggle to keep weight on their dogs particularly if working through the cold weather and I'm sure some dogs do just 'do well' although (I think I'm mis-quoting one of Pippa's articles) the dogs don't wield the tin opener
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? No, no, I'm not making excuses, Charlie eats what I give him, for sure, and it's up to me to cut it down. It's just that he'll be on the same amount of kibble as for a 3month old according to the packet, and I bet the weight doesn't fall off! If I keep going for 3 weeks, he'll be having 220g less than the packet calls for. He doesn't get THAT many training treats...although, maybe I should look up the calorie content of the different treats I use.
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? No, even though I would like to be wrong, I know she is carrying 1 or 2 kg too much. I think that getting it off will be hard and keeping it off will be harder but now she's coming up one, I'll up the exercise as well as reducing the food. I feel my HD s pain on this one....... I hope those struggling find it plain sailing. We get a problem with coprophagia corporatist she's pulled back too hard.
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? Murphy is 7.35kg at 10 weeks, is that a lot? I have no idea! X
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? my jasper is a big guy,.......he grew 5 kilo every monthly visit to the vets,....they are all different
Re: when do they reach adult size / weight ? They are all different. Charlie is a chunky boy, although I'm hoping he won't turn out to be quite as heavy as I feared at first. He grew like this: 8 weeks 6.5kg 9 weeks 7.5kg 10 weeks 9kg 3 months 11kg 4 months 17kg 5 months 22kg
