Where do you keep your treats when training?

I keep a few treats in my hand because once you've started handling them the dogs can smell the treats anyway and I can quickly reward Juno without having to introduce another movement - hand to pocket or hand to treat bag. Juno knows that the treats are there but she doesn't necessarily get a treat every time. I've found the treat ready in the hand particularly useful when out walking for a quick distraction when something unexpected occurs.

This is an interesting discussion! I've often wondered about whether Bonnie should know I have treats.

One positive trainer on facebook argues the solution to your dog never knowing whether you have treats or not is to always have them.

I think I agree with this positive trainer. As far as Bonnie's concerned, I'm the woman who walks her, feeds her, plays with her and dispenses treats if she has done something well. Psychologically I can't see that it matters to the dog, as long as she's getting the treats for good behaviour.

The downside is that if I've run out, she doesn't understand, she thinks I'm withholding them which is a shame if she's done something very good and I can't reward her.
