Hello all, We have just spent an enjoyable (but very wet) day at the "Dogs Unleashed" event in Bakewell. There were lots of the usual trade stands, many of them selling dog food which they claimed was better than anyone elses of course. It got me wondering if we were feeding the best food for our 10 month old boy. He is currrently on CSJ Little Champ, but seems to have lost interest in it a little bit as I mentioned in a previous post. One of the trade stands at the show was selling "Oscars" which they said was very good. Then there are the dozens of brands at the local "Pets At Home" and "Kenelgate" stores not to mention the Supermarket. My old Lab who died last year aged 14 loved Wagg from the local ASDA. I was just wondering if anyone out there could give me a few pointers as to which food they use. I want to do the best for my lovely boy. Thanks for any advice Chris.
Re: Which Food? hi , i have jasper black lab 6 month, .... the breeder had been giving him beta from pets at home, i have stuck with this food from day one,....he is a very healthy boy, .....he as got a bit fussy lately so i add chicken stock or sardines in with his food
Re: Which Food? Gosh Chris, you are going to get as many answers as you have seen stands at the Fair! Dex is on Royal Canin gastro Intestinal Junior.......I had 2 months of upset tum plus a nasty Giardia infection when I first got him so the vet said let's get him on this while he's so sensitive.....that was 2 months ago and I need to go back to the vet to ask if this is what he should be on going forward or should I try and get him onto the Royal Canin maxi that he was on before...... The upset tum at the beginning has scared me about giving him treats( the trainer at his obedience class gave me a tube of cream cheese to train with.......dear me,the results later that day.....and I'm not talking about his 'stays'! so he loves a very miserable :'( existence with us where he just lives on his kibble....think I might loosen up a bit though now,and experiment a bit!woof,Dexter says with relief! I'm very concerned about keeping his weight right too so staying with the kibble has been an easy ( and maybe lazy?) way to do that Angela
Re: Which Food? Riley went through a very sensitive period when he was younger but my understanding was their immune system actually takes quite a while to build up and he'd probably just picked up a bug from somewhere. We've ended up on Skinners duck and rice which seems to suit him and have a positive effect on his itchy skin. He gets treats too though - a bit of fish with his kibble sometimes, the odd egg. He loves broccoli and banana both of which Lizzie chucks on the floor regularly. We just stop him eating stuff that could be really bad like onions, raisins and chocolate. The rescue centre has benefited from unfinished bags of Purina(he came with as a puppy) and Science Plan(vet recommendation).
Re: Which Food? Sam is on Skinners Salmon and Rice . He was on CSJ like all my other dogs have been, but he began scratching a lot and lost some shine on his coat , now restored since the change four weeks ago, less poo as well , an added bonus
Re: Which Food? I'm intrigued by the comments above about the dogs getting a bit fussy.. Lady always seems to eat like she's never been fed before and it doesn't seem to matter what it is as long as it's FOOOOOOD! ;D Just off now as she's summoned me to play with her in the garden and she isn't taking no for an answer. 8)
Re: Which Food? Can relate to that David , Sam always eats like its his last meal ever, no matter what it is : :
Re: Which Food? david, one day i had tomato soup for my lunch, i did not have it all so poured it over his dried food ... from him getting the taste of tomato and chicken stock ,if i give him his dry food he just looks up at me and pushes his bowl, as if to say come on , give me the good stuff also i think from giving him the best treats for the recall, he as got the taste for the high life .....
Re: Which Food? Charlie is on royal canin junior labrador - which is what the breeder had him on, and the vet nurse said was fine. I haven't had a moment's trouble with Charlie and this food - no runny poo and he looks glossy and sleek, so I'm sticking with it. I worry about the amount I give him, but one week he looks a bit podgy, the next a bit thin so I'm relaxing about that now. The breeder told me "if he is really whooshing his food down, maybe give him a bit more". Hah - the labrador royal canin stuff is shaped like hard doughnuts, supposed to make greedy pups eat more slowly. His current record is 15.8 seconds for 100g of kibble. I might post a video of Charlie record speed eating.
