hi all, I live in a high rise apartment on 9th floor and have house trained my 8 month old lab nicely and he is using one of our balcony area as his toilet area. He knocks on the door whenever he needs to wee or poop and i always keep newspapers there so he goes and do his stuff on the newspapers and i pick and dispose off them afterwards. I trained him for balcony as it was convenient for us to train him there as everytime (it was 5-10min in the starting as we all know) taking him 9 floors down was not easy. Now though his wee and poop's timings are still not quite the same everytime, its like poop twice a day sometimes and thrice some other times etc. Now few of my friends are saying that I should start taking him downstairs everytime and he should leave this habbit of using balcony as his toilet area. But even in our society i need to clear his wee and poop as im doing in my balcony and i take him down twice a day for a walk already and if he feels he needs to go he do his stuff then and there and i clean it up. So my question is - should I really make him learn to go downstairs only (9floors down) when im ok with him using my balcony?? I mean this is necessary to make a dog use a ground only as his toilet area and not tiled balcony covered with newspapers? Sorry for such long post
If you're happy with the situation as it is, then I'd be inclined to carry on as it is. I also live in an apartment, although we're on the bottom floor so have a large terrace rather than a balcony, but we're still two flights of stairs from the "real" outside on the front of the building (because it's on a hill). My two do most of their toileting when we're on walks, but occasionally will ask to go out for a quick one on the terrace, which is where they went when toilet training. It's convenient for us, especially when I'm in the middle of work (I work from home) and so we're happy to continue with it. We just clean the terrace as soon as one of them goes - which means picking up solids and, when there's no snow, washing down the area with warm soapy water each time.
Thanks for replying! Well he also does all his toilet things while on walk but since he has this balcony habbit he keeps on banging the door quite often and sometimes he do proper wee and sometimes just a drop or nothing at all. Just goes out sits there enjoys view and comes back in few mins later. Now i know he can hold his bladder well as he stays put whole night with it but how can i make sure that he doesn't go in the balcony this often and hold his bladder nicely during the day as well. Im afraid if i will say no to him for the balcony he will start weeing in the house again .
I think it's fine - I'm sure he will go elsewhere on free runs? Or you could teach him to do this - .
Ohhhh my goddd This is awesome!! But im sure Charlie can never fit on that seat How can one teach a dog so much I cant even teach him to stay on 4 when someome comes home
Wouldn't that be GREAT.....to train our dogs to use the toilet and flush!! Great for our dogs, too, when the weather is awful outdoors! My Lab hates going out to wee or whatever when it's raining....he would love to have a dry place to go to the bathroom! I just loved the videos. Thank you.
I second that!!! Don't know if Cooper would fit on the seat (have never tried) but I also have trouble getting him not to jump on people!!!
