Well, it was to be expected, but no amount of preparation can really prepare us for the discomfort our labs feel following an operation.

Many of you know, through Bud, that he had his neutering operation this morning (he didn't actually know the full nature of his op. Only that he was getting to see his favourite vet.) We are now endeavouring to comfort him and at the same time hold back our own tears as we listen to him whimpering. We can't administer any further pain relief until tomorrow morning, and he can only take one dose daily so we hope it is strong enough to ease him through much of the day.

He has eaten normally, though not taken too much water yet but he can be a fussy drinker.

Tonight i feel will be a long night. :(

Oh poor Bud.....Lilly was really pathetic after her spay too but didn't whimper too long.
I think one of us slept on the sofa next to her (as you do)
    Hope he settles x

    Thanks Jacqui.

And i will be on the sofa tonight beside him. Not sure how much sleep i will get but a day or two of little sleep is worth it if it means Bud is comforted through his temporary ordeal.x

I think it is the effect of the anaesthetic which makes them whimper and appear to be so miserable, my poor by was so awful that the vet came to see him on the way home! He was absolutely fine the next day and I am sure Bud will be as well.

Thank you. We are remaining fairly positive as our vet was really happy with everything, and believes Bud to be exceptionally strong and healthy. Doesn't stop the worry though, or the wish to take away the discomfort.

Harley whined a lot after her op. I slept downstairs with her for several days then my daughter done the same for a few more days. I hope you both manage to get some sleep tonight x

    Thank you.

Sounds like Harley didn't take too well to her op. Good to hear the family helped with the improvised sleeping duties.

Bud is kind of sleeping at the moment, but having to watch him as we have removed the "collar" for a while to make him more comfortable. Replacing it when he starts to stir again and it will be on during the night to help prevent any night scratching, especially if i do drop off to sleep.x

It's good that he's eaten normally, so he should be feeling much better tomorrow. Wispa and Tuppence recovered very quickly from their spays, after the initial grogginess and whining, so the challenge then is trying to restrict activity.

I hope Bud sleeps well tonight and that you get some sleep too. :)

You are being a very good and caring dog owner, well done. Bud will be feeling more chipper and back to his normal self in no time. :)

    Poor Bud :(
Hopefully he's not in too much pain if he's had his quota of analgesics - the anaesthetic does make them whimper pathetically :(
Wishing you both a comfortable night.

Aww Bud.....and Tony!!!! Hopefully you can both rest some tonight, and tomorrow will be a much better day.

As much as I hated leaving Bella overnight after her spay....it really helps with the guilt factor I think....since you don't have to hear them all wimpery after their surgeries.

Many Many years ago - in a land, far, far away ::) I had a baby goat that had to have surgery....and I took her home right afterwards, with pain meds of course...but the poor darling....the wimpering and crying they do is just heartbreaking....I just say on the sofa with her and cried right along with her.... It was a hideous day..... :'( :'( Of course, the next day she was perfectly fine...but the built during that first day was just awful!!!!

Bella and I send best wishes to Bud and you too Tony!!!

I have never had to use a buster collar on any of my dogs after surgery, so you may find Bud doesn't need it, especially when you can keep your eye on him and this may make him feel happier tomorrow.

    Re: Whimpering Bud!

Thank you everyone for your kind words. My apologies for not addressing many of you individually. Managed to get roughly an hours sleep, and no real opportunity for more until this evening at the earliest. Not at my clearest at the moment.

Stacia......i tried a couple of times to relieve Bud of his collar but he was so very determined to lick and bite the site of the surgery, and had i fallen asleep, which i apparently did, he would have more than likely caused himself more harm. He won't have it on much of today, but any time i have to be out of the room i will have to refit it.

Granca......a great deal of whining through the night. And still a little now. But he has toileted ok this morning (though not to the quantity that is normal for the morning.) And he finally had a better quantity of water which i praised him for.

His pain relief appears to be a liquid which i have to use a syringe for and empty over his breakfast. It's called Metacam. I was expecting pills initially but this will hopefully be taken into his system more smoothly. And then it's just the hope he doesn't experience any negative side-effects.

I will keep everyone updated over the coming days. Apologies again if i don't reply to all individual postings.

    Tony.x

You must feel exhausted and its hard not to worry when our dogs are uncomfortable. Hope Bud picks up today and you can fit in some sleep.

Ah, Tony, I feel for you. When our pups are not well it is horrid. We'd gladly take the discomfort onto ourselves if it would save them from it, but of course that's not possible. All we can do is make sure they feel safe and loved while their little bodies get over it.

Bud is a lucky puppy to have you as his dad. Hang in there. You'll feel so, so happy when he is back to his usual bouncy self!

    Rosie

(And, of course, Pongo sends licks and waggytails to Bud.)

    Re: Whimpering Bud!

So sorry Bud is still uncomfortable. Heavens, I must be hard as I have never stayed up at night with my dogs after an op :'(

Rourke's wound was very small, but poor Drift was heavily bruised, he didn't have a very good surgeon.. I have helped at many a castration, the nurse has to hold the testicles while they are cut off - too much information!

Metacam is a good pain killer and I am sure by the time your read this Bud should be feeling significantly better. My boys send him their commiserations but say it does make life much easier as you don't have to think about girls and can concentrate wholly on food and walks ;D

Oh dear, Tony. It's so hard when you can't explain to them why they're feeling uncomfortable. Metacam should do the trick, though. If he's eating and now drinking more as well perhaps he doesn't feel too bad, even though he's not the usual bouncy Bud.

I hope you manage to have some rest today and that Bud feels better soon.

Rosie....Thank you for your kind words. And Bud very much appreciates the licks and waggytails from Pongo.

You are so right when you say we wish we could transfer the suffering onto ourselves -as someone who can personally appreciate Bud's emotions i can safely say i would carry his burden if it were possible.

Stacia...i wouldn't say you are hard. Everyone handles these matters in a way that suits them best. I worry a great deal when those closest to me are poorly (in my case, Bud, and my wife.) Staying up with Bud is my way of making certain that he remains as comfortable as is possible. The fact that we both slept for a short period of time must have meant at that point we were both at ease. Thanks for the kind thoughts from your boys, and also for confirming that Metacam is a good pain relief. I think it is taking effect to some degree now.

Beanwood......Bud appreciates the gesture from Benson. Rest for me will hopefully come once my wife returns from work.

If Bud had his way he would be his usual bouncy self....he showed signs of alertness when my wife came downstairs this morning. He doesn't seem to appreciate that he needs to rest in order to recover as quickly as he can so that he can then return to his natural bounciness.
