Poor lad , Sam sends sympathy, he was a shocker after his castration , cried all night and yes , I stayed with him too ::) For him , I think it was the confusion , he was just thoroughly upset, but right as rain after about 48 hours, raring to go . I didn't use a collar, he seemed to be in ignorant bliss of his wound but I did use a soft buster collar on Millie after her complex eye surgery , she tolerated the soft collar really well which was a good job as she had to wear it for three weeks ::)

I know it's different from a spay but Chepi had her spay recently and didn't drink for more than 24 hours. She was crying all the first evening and the start of the next day. The vet nurse advised me that there were other pain relieving drugs available if she seemed to need them. She was also on the one every 24 hours type. I kept up that pain relief for 4 days. She's back to normal now.
I just hadn't really known that the op was going to be such a big deal.
I hope he is feeling better by now :)

Appreciated Kate. I am not convinced that Bud is feeling any confusion, though i do understand how your Sam reacted in this manner. With Bud i think it is more the discomfort and, now anyway, the wanting to be more active but coming up against restrictions. He doesn't realise that he needs to take things easy. Far better for him to rest accordingly now and get back to his usual routine as quickly as possible, than overdo activity now and prolong his agony. And ours.

In regards to the collar, Bud doesn't appreciate the restrictive nature when he is wearing it, but i haven't detected a real hatred and desire to try and remove it. He does appear to be able to sleep with it on in short doses. If it wasn't for him being so determined to attack his wound then he would have more time out of the collar, but that intention went out the window earlier today.

    Thanks again for your input.

The crying is so heartwrenching at times isn't it? Bud has been similar to Chepi with the timing of his whimpering. And he has now started again, which is partly due to my wife returning from work and he always has his "i've missed you mum" cries. But they are lingering more than normal which must be pain related. A pity the pain relief doesn't last for longer but as each day goes by his recovery should be improving so the amount of pain will hopefully decrease. Glad Chepi is ok now.

Oh dear, Tony. I hope you and Bud have a better night tonight. It seems endless at the time, doesn't it, but I'm sure Bud will soon feel more comfortable.

Tuppy wore her buster collar (and also an inflatable collar after she'd learned to get her cut leg into the 'bucket'!) most of the time for about four weeks, as the cut was nasty and in a difficult place for it to heal easily. She soon got used to it, although she didn't exactly like it - but I dreaded the thought of another anaesthetic to have the leg re-stitched, so it was better to be safe than sorry.

I hope Bud's still eating and drinking well - Wispa and Tuppy send lots of licks for a quick recovery.

    Morning :)

Granca- thank you for your latest comments. I am hoping Bud won't need to wear his collar anywhere near as long as Tuppy wore hers, but i do know that if the area operated upon has not healed substantially, Bud will find a way of irritating it to the point of needing it re-stitched, and like with yourself, this thought does not sit well with me. Bud sends gentle little licks back to your two girls, and i am sure he will talk with them and his other friends over the course of the next week. :)

Well, a marked improvement on Friday night, and we appear to have established that a fair amount of Bud's whimpering has been centred on seeking attention!

Bud has three locations within the house where he sleeps regularly, and we noticed late yesterday evening that if he is in a room separate to us, his crying would cease after a few minutes. Yet, once he was in the same room with us, every few moments he would sit back up and look at us and cry, and groan, and virtually sound like a frustrated child! So last night he slept guarding the front door, which is his favourite sleeping place, especially at night. And he did sleep. Which meant i also slept a lot more soundly than the night before. I woke a few times out of natural concern i think and checked on him, or when i heard him moving around. But the night was a vast improvement to the night previous. :)

As i write these words Bud has toileted fine with no signs of distress (he had been whimpering a little before doing his business.) He tends to refuse a drink in the mornings until he has had his breakfast. I always find this odd simply because i could not go a morning without my first early brew of the day ;D. I am pretty certain Bud is feeling discomfort, as would be expected, but he must cope with pain better than we realised because he is sleeping again now and i am fairly certain his pain relief from yesterday would not still be active.

Right, time to see how today unfolds. Thank you everyone for your continued warmth and welcoming messages. This 'aging father' of a youthful chocolate lab is very appreciative of this friendly community. And my wife also loves reading all of the comments, and realising how much Bud is recognised and liked.

Ha! Attaboy, Bud - milk the sympathy for all it's worth... ;D

Glad to hear he is looking more comfortable (and that you both got some sleep). No doubt that sleep is the best possible healer. He'll be back to normal in no time.

Glad you had a better night and Bud seems to be making good improvements.
Not surprised he feels sorry for himself and was looking for attention, but comforting for you to know that it wasn't all about physical pain.
Hopefully he will be back to himself in no time and have no memory of it all :)

Well done, Bud! You've got them well trained!

I wouldn't worry too much about Bud not drinking first thing in the morning. Like you, I can't start the day without a cup of tea, but Wispa and Tuppy don't usually drink until after they've had a good play in the garden after their breakfast. I put just a little water on their kibble, not to soak it (they probably wouldn't wait that long!), but to make sure they've had a bit of liquid with it.

Glad to hear you had a better night and hope Bud's feeling even better today (but with a reminder from Wispa and Tuppy not to forget the sympathy ploy!). :)

He certainly receives the attention as he deserves the love we share. The fact that some of his crying is not due to pain does allow for a degree of comfort and relief. And it means i can, on occasions, give him the "Really?" look which i think he gives me from time to time :)

    Re: Whimpering Bud!

Granca - I've added a little water in the past to Bud's morning kibble, purely out of the belief that he must surely need to get a little liquid into his system. Not so often now as it is apparent that he doesn't need or desire water at the times i thought he would need it. He normally drinks after breakfast, or before if he has been active. Just not first thing, or even upon returning from his morning walk and run (which i will be glad to return to once he is fully recovered.) I miss our early starts to the day.

I am sure Bud will take heed from Wispa and Tuppy regarding the sympathy ploy. Indulging here in a couple of extra photos, something normally saved for his diary.

But Bud, you're not really trying ... I see no chewed edges to that buster collar, in fact it looks pristine!

It's good to see those expressive eyes, so he's not letting up on the sympathy ploy! I hope he has a good night tonight - and you too.

:) To be honest i don't think he can really get to the edges comfortably to chew on them.
He has been continuing with the attention seeking a little this evening (in fact it started around the time my wife would have left work.....quite spooky his connection with her!!!)
Thank you from us both. We hope to have a restful night. Early start in the morning as he has his 2 day post op check up. And then his other one a week later. Goodnight to you and Wispa and Tuppy.

Aw that first photo he's definitely going for the sympathy vote. The second one looks more like "don't you dare publish a photo of me wearing the cone of shame" :D
Hope you and your lovely boy get a good night's sleep tonight and all goes well at the vet tomorrow :)

And yes, i believe you are correct with regards to both photos. He certainly is not looking too impressed in the second photo. :)
