It was bound to happen sooner or later, but Willow grazed an electric fence with her head on our walk this evening. I have never heard such a horrible noise from her. She screamed for about ten seconds before calming down. Poor girl. She then nearly did the exact same thing again, but I managed to call her away with a few centimetres to spare. I think she'll probably have another encounter or two before learning where the ouchies are coming from! Poor wee girl :(

I've mentioned it here before, but we've had quite a few encounters! We have a chicken fence. He learned after the second one but it's not nice to witness.
Best thing is to carry on and pretend it never happened. As hard as it seems. If you don't make a big deal if it, nor will they.
We've had a third zap since - a neighbours dog was over and they were playing. Monty knew to stay away but the other dog didn't so I disconnected the power. The other dog kept jumping into the wire so poor Monts assumed it was no longer nasty. The next day the power was back on and he got a zap :(
He did get revenge though as another time the dog was around we decided to leave it powered up so Monts wouldn't get confused again. The other dog was zapped and the owner made a HUGE fuss and the dog was a shivering wreck. I'm sure if they had just carried on and ignored it, the dog would've done the same. Monty's never made a big deal of it as we haven't either (despite the horrible yelp he makes!)

Yes, I remember you saying about Monty way back, and thought of him when Willow got zapped. It's bound to happen because they're everywhere around here. Lots of our walking terrain is shared with livestock, so they'll learn in the end what that ticking noise means. It's just not a nice lesson to learn!

No it's horrible! I felt awful for Monty when he last got a zap after we turned it off - totally my fault :(
We're surrounded by farms here and the cows are all in electric wire - a single strand of wire about knee height, so totally different to the poultry netting. Monts hasn't found out that they're electric yet...

Ah, that's exactly what this was; a single strand of wire. I guess my two are a little taller than Monts - although this was over the side of a steep hill and so she was very unlucky for it to be at head-height from where we were standing. Most of them are that type, with a few being a thicker tape, which is easier to see.

Still, I'd rather that than the dreaded barbed wire.

Oh yes, barbed wire is dreadful stuff.

Sorry that poor Willow got a zap... The sensation lasts for quite some seconds, so I'm not surprised that she squealed for a bit, poor lass.

I doubt it. He was a bit shaken, then looked at the cows in the field as if they'd done it. At least he didn't blame me...
