Has anyone had any issues with mushrooms growing in the yard? Not ones that you plant but wild and annoying mushrooms? My Pomeranian Odie ate one with out me noticing until he threw it up. But he was violently ill. Projectile diarrhea, projectile vomiting.. He threw up 22 times in just 45 minutes. He was on IV fluids for 48 hours before he was able to come home. The vet told me if we had brought him in just an hour or two later he would have died :(

So now I'm so paranoid about letting the dogs play in the yard due to them finding mushrooms in the grass. We pick them as we see them but they always creep up.

I wonder if Odie only reacted the way he did because he was 3.5 pounds? Axel is now 70 pounds so maybe he would just get a bit of an upset tummy? Or are they dangerous no matter the size of the dog?

I'm always concerned about fungi because we have a lot growing where we live in Andorra. People go out foraging for them at certain times of year. I'd love to do the same, but I know I'd end up poisoning everyone I hold dear, so it's probably best I leave it to the guys who know what they're doing ;)

I was really worried about the dogs even smelling the mushrooms/toadstools, brushing up against them. So I did some research and it seem that contact isn't enough, they need to ingest them to have harmful effects. Even just licking wouldn't do anything. My two have no interest in eating them, so, as much as I remain vigilant, I have no cause for concern.

However, if your dog(s) do(es) have a penchant for them, then I would be very concerned indeed. Not just because of the ones in your yard, because that's manageable, even if it means you do a daily sweep of your yard to pull any new fungi before you let your dogs out, but moreso because of what they might find when out and about.

I have no answers as to how to address that issue though, sorry. But at home, just make sure they don't have access to them, and you should be OK.

Odie still has an interest in them sadly. He had eaten another one while staying at a friends house. Luckily it was caught in time so the vet was able to induce vomiting and give him charcoal. Axel I think would go for them as he picks up every stick he sees on the ground.

I'll just keep being as diligent as possible in our yard and cautious while anywhere else

It is definitely hard to keep them from investigating, exploring and eating things that they come across. You are smart to keep removing the mushrooms and limit the exposure to them.

My pooch, who will pick up and eat (or try to) every piece of garbage there is and just about anything else, will only give mushrooms a cursory sniff and leave them. After your other dog's experience I'm sure you must be hyper vigilant, but maybe Axel will just ignore them? I'm sure the weight difference will be a protectant for him too. He would probably have to eat quite a bit more than your Pom. But I don't know that much about it, to be honest.
