Re: X-Rays Just to throw this into the mix......Lilly's SEVERELY dysplastic hips were NOT picked up by our jobbing vets and she was referred to ortho thinking it was her knee. This was because she had become so well adapted muscle wise and wasn't giving anything away on exam. I think she had even had an xray of her knees under light sedation but nothing early on was pointing to her hips. So....my medical training would point me away from too many xrays but I really do see the merit of this.
Re: X-Rays Im a worrier and I do like the idea of the reassurance some zero elbows and low hips would provide me. but hd is more of an unknown due to the quality of her breeder and I certainly wouldn't breed from her. Therefore I would not have her elbows / hips xrayed unless recommended by the vet for health reasons. part of me wonders whether I should just let sleeping dogs lie but id regret it if when shes three shes turned out really fab and id like a litter out of her.
Re: X-Rays I was in two minds about Penny, as I too had worries about the quality of her breeder. Her parents had decent hip scored but one of my colleagues who used to work in hydrotherapy scared me a bit when she said they'd seen loads of Labradors from a breeder in the same area, coming to them for treatment with severely dysplastic hips before the age of two years. I just didn't know if I wanted to know so I could take precautions for the future, or if I should just wait and see what happened. In the end Penny became lame and stiff so we had to opt for the X-rays.

I decided 2 years ago to have Benson's hip and elbows scored for breeding purposes and my local vet (Winchester) quoted £450 which included a general anaesthetic. I did some research and found a breeder in Eastleigh who was disillusioned with the high costs and had bought together a vet /radiographer who could provide the same service for £250, without an anaesthetic. I made an appointment and found the place packed with dog owners from all over the countryside. The BVA forms were completed and when my turn came I was given a lead apron and held Benson in the various positions under the X Ray machine whilst the images were taken. Minutes later the films were developed and I was given a detailed briefing by the vet on the probable outcome. A few weeks later I received the official report, together with the X Rays from BVA and the results registered with the Kennel Club. Highly recommended for owners living in Hampshire who do not want to submit their dogs to the risk of a general anaesthetic. Roger

Southern Canine imaging is now run by three ladies and a chap and the owners of the dogs no longer get involved in holding the dogs when X-rays are taken. But yes, that was the case just a few years ago when owners were involved in the whole process. The clinic has since moved premises but is still in Hampshire, in the middle of nowhere!

Benson was placed on his back and the radiographer positioned his elbows or hips and I held them while she took the photograph. From all accounts this practice has now changed! Roger

If it is the same place it was run by a lady who bred Dogue de Bordeaux from her private home called Wanitopa, in Eastleigh presumably because of the huge cost of X Raying large dogs. Everyone was very impressed with the service; the initial consultation by the vet was carried out in the garage and the X Ray was done in the garden shed! Glad to hear it is still going and hope the costs are still competitive and no need for a GA. Roger

Re: X-Rays I was really pleased when I heard the result. One of the dogs was sired by Ziggy, his hip score came out as 2/2. That is a phenomenal score considering the mean score for the breed is somewhere in the mid twenties!
